QUAERITUR: How to get a user icon/image/avatar for comments?

From a reader:

I notice that some commenters have a icon or photo next to their handle. How does one go about acquiring this? Do you have to order a certain tonnage of Mystic Monk?

Yes.  That exactly right.  The more Mystic Monk Coffee or Tea you buy, the quicker and the cooler icon/avatar you get.   Think of the kid’s cereal scams of yore.

Seriously, I believe people can get a Gravatar image to appear, if you get an account and upload the image.

Yes, it is gravatar. Go to http://www.gravatar.com to create one (if you have a wordpress account you already have one).

I’m trying to figure out how to have a Gravatar (or else replace Gravatar altogether) for another, more private blog and not have it show up on others such as this. So far my best guess is that I’ll have to link it to a different email account. But if anyone knows…

  13. The Cobbler says:

I should have put the word “WordPress” before the word “Blog”. If WordPress didn’t basically rely on Gravatar there’d be no issue for me.

Let’s do my own test here.

  15. mvhcpa says:

It uses the one tied to my blogspot/gmail account (probably because it is linked to that Google Friend Connect thingy.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a Google account that I use for several blogs, with the same username, but on at least one other blog, I have a “profile” picture of myself, which remains the same on that particular blog, not changing when, say, my Facebook profile picture does. It does not show up on any other blogs. So, this process must go by whichever organization sponsors the blog, then? [I am feeling more and more foolish as I type this! Should I explain that I am not very “computer-savvy?”]

I went to log in, and finally realized that they didn’t have any of my email addresses at Gravatar, so I’d have to register, which I tried to do. I also found out that Gravatar has acquired WordPress, so that I could try my username, etc. there, and they gave me slightly complicated instructions. I tried the username and password I use here, but they told me that the username may not use any capital letters or spaces! So, I picked another favorite name I use, which happens to have a foreign accent mark in it. They rejected that one – not because of the accent mark, but because the username was already taken! It’s a rather rare name, so I’m thinking that it is probably my account, but I’m not having any luck signing in under that name! They had told me to look at the email address that is listed under that name, but that must have been presupposing that my password would work, in order to get me to that point!

So, anyway, the gist of it is that I am banned for a half an hour from trying any more passwords!!! (I feel like a felon or something!) . . . maybe Confession would help? ; )

    [I’m about ready to give up! Here’s my avatar: ; ) ]
