I presented a poster (sort of like adult science fair) at a library conference in the spring, and we, along with many others, put a QR code on the poster. Then people viewing it could take a photo with their phone, and get more information later. They’re great for a conference situation where someone’s physical attention to your display or presentation will probably only last 5 seconds – if you have a QR code, they’re more likely to visit you virtually at a later time.
Had to Google to see what they were…and when I saw one I realized oh yeah, I know what those are. Just didn’t realize they were called QR codes. :)
I am in the same boat as MJ above.
I’m a new smartphone user and am not sure exactly how to ‘read’ them, but I do know what they are! (Is there an app? I have an Android phone)
So they’re a newer form of a UPC?
When I read the post, I started out as a “No idea” but in fifteen minutes have graduated to “Yes, I know them, read them and make them.” Very easy, and a most cool addition to the notice in the Church porch advertising the new parish website. Always wondered what these things were :-)
Well now I know – wow what an amazing thing! Made my day I think!

LOL. And of course you right! It is a science fair for grown ups, except the size. Mine has been for many years around 30,ooo participants, until I left academia. I like your idea to include QR on a poster. Very hip. I have to suggest it to my wife.

Like Fr. Tim, I had seen these things about and wondered what they were. I also googled and have now got to ‘I know what they are’ – can’t get any further at present as I don’t have a fancy enough cell ‘phone.
I do, however, look forward to seeing the reactions of older parishioners tomorrow morning when they see the youngsters waving their ‘phones at the notice board. ;-)

Great explanation on wikipedia. The Iphone has a number of apps that read and create.
We’ve been recently incorporating them into the events ads at FLL.
I thought those things were some sort of Magic Eye thing until I couldn’t find the hidden picture.

I know what they are but, alas, I don’t have a smart phone, so they don’t benefit me all that much.
I am like MikeM, I have an small flip phone with a camera, but I can’t do Apps. I’m curious as to what is in the codes, but don’t think it’s worth it to have a more expensive phone with the more expensive plan…
@eiggam QR codes can include web link, phone number, a vCard, a text snippet. Funny thing is you can put the code anywhere…look up “QR code” and “scarf” to see folks knitting QR codes into clothing…printing it on silk scarves, also seen on blankets…pretty fun way to embed links or even poetry in an abstract visual way.
Apparently a 21st century thing. Nothing against it, per se, but alas…not there yet.
No Facebook account yet, either. Sort of an equisetum among the roses.

Sorry, I’m not up on all this techie stuff….I know only the basics of using a laptop computer, a cell phone (bare bones, not a Smart one) and a digital camera. Those are enough for me.
